The modern world can not be imagined without the power industry and professionals in this field. It is the constant development of the energy industry that allows humanity to enjoy the usual benefits of civilization. The University began training students in this area many years ago and nowadays it has rich experience and solid fundamentals. That is a reason why TPU alumni are in great demand in the labor market.


Currently, nature-friendly energy problems are at the forefront of international science and TPU was one of the first who accepted this new challenge to the humankind.

The world needs efficient and green energy production with the use of traditional energy carriers. Many nations, signed the Paris Agreement, began active research in this area, because since the pre-industrial period the average temperature on the planet has risen by 1 degree and further climate change is a potentially irreversible threat to humanity. Thus, urgent measures should be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. One of the ways to reach it is the introduction of new technologies for energy production.

Within the framework of this research area, TPU established Strategic Academic Unit Ecological Energetic.

The University is one of the leaders in this domain. One of the main goals that TPU decided to fulfill is the development of new technologies for resource-efficient and clean energy production. Today the University jointly with Inter RAO UES (Russian diversified energy holding company) is developing coal gasification technologies that allow receiving more energy with lower CO2 emissions. Another area is dedicated to solid oxide fuel cells for hydrogen energy, working on synthesis gas that is the product of gasification of coal.

The University in collaboration with Kutateladze Institute of Thermophysics SB RAS developed a method of reliable control of ecological indicators of coal combustion in the form of organic coal-water fuels under conductive and convective heating, and under mixed heat exchange. TPU in partnership with Boreskov Institute of Catalysis and Institute for Interdisciplinary Innovations of Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg (Germany) determined physicochemical mechanisms of interaction of various grades of coal and catalytic additives in the gasification process.

Two original experimental devices were created to study the processes of ignition of suspensions of organic coal-water fuels in the vortex and layer regime. The laboratories have all possible conditions for studying ignition and combustion of promising suspensions in heat power plants. For the first time, TPU carried out experimental studies of the dependence of the ignition timing of original and heat treated solid fuels on intensity of the radiant heat flux using a continuous laser at the original high-precision facility. Based on the data obtained one determined activation energy of the oxidation reaction of fuel in its heterogeneous and homogeneous ignition.

Further progress in the area of environmentally friendly energy production requires training excellent specialists and researchers, capable of effectively solving tasks of sustainable energy supply with minimal impact on the environment. Understanding this the University jointly with national and international partners are developing new academic programs in Environmentally Friendly Technologies of Energy Conversion and Hydrogen Energy Technologies.

TPU throws up considerable forces into the development of areas in Ecological Technologies of Gasification and Ignition of Solid Fuels, Hydrogen Power Engineering Based on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, and Technologies for Liquefying Gaseous Energy Carriers. Thus, the research teams strive to reach excellence in fundamental and applied research in reducing the negative impact of energy production on the environment and to expand knowledge in the field of clean energy. The University plans to develop broad collaboration with a number of national and international research centers, such as Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic), Indian Institute of Technology Madra, Universite Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), and University of Wisconsin–Madison (USA).
