The StrAU People and Technologies is dedicated to the training of a new generation of engineers according to the advanced social, humanitarian and engineering knowledge, and challenges. The StrAU allows creating a system for involving engineers in solving global social problems by developing particular solutions oriented to the special needs of a category of people with special needs. The StrAU plans to develop original Master degree programs in Resource Management and Engineering of Supporting and Rehabilitation Technologies to train engineers able to design socially-oriented products and improving quality of life.

The structural divisions of the StrAU:

The main areas of research and engineering projects:

  • Assessment and improvement of the social, economic and emotional well-being of senior citizens;
  • Technologies of social and cultural mobility;
  • Motor, social, psychological adaptation of children with disabilities for training in the higher education system.


Expected results of the StrAU:

  • Training of highly qualified engineers with a set of socio-humanitarian competencies and skills able to ensure sustainable development of society and improving the quality of life;
  • Social and humanitarian, engineering and information technologies to prevent social exclusion of persons with special needs.


Results achieved in 2016:

  • TPU in collaboration with University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen (Germany) and Universities of Southampton (UK) developed a method for studying factors of subjective well-being of persons with special needs.
  • The University carried out a study of the market for technical means for rehabilitation and medical products for people with disabilities (the market). One formed a list of existing long-term solutions for the market (more than 70 solutions), revealed key trends in solutions for people with disabilities, and prepared a set of cases and a standard specification for solution development for the market.
  • TPU analyzed the national and international project with Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). One developed a model of comfort environment using RRI tools, which includes four areas of assessment (employment, education, communication, and living environment), five comfort assessment profiles (accessibility, discrimination, finance, state support, and innovations), and individual characteristics and factors, financial and socio-psychological results. TPU became an official member of RRI-Practice project, Horizon2020 program.
  • The research team developed a model for assessing the quality of life in conditions of sustainable development and a Guide for Street Universal Design based on the Principle of a City for All. One developed recommendation for designing city public spaces developed a crowdsourcing platform model for study needs of people in sustainable development technologies and adopted a city simulation modeling technique.
